Sometimes you’ve got a hobby, an at-home business, or machinery that produces a lot of oil. If you’re sick of seeing that container brimming with waste oil, it’s time to do something. Today we’re going to look at household oil disposal, whether you’re dealing with a drum of waste oil from years of use, the fallout of a furnace oil leak, or even an at-home business looking to dispose of waste oil in a more convenient way. Learn more below.
Larger Quantities of Motor Oil
Whether you’re a DIY auto mechanic, hobbyist, or run oil-hungry machinery at your home, motor oil can build up, especially over the decades. We’re not talking just a can or two of motor oil, but significant amounts, such as full drums of waste oil, more than a retail store will take. Years of oil storage can also lead to chlorine halogen contamination, making oil difficult to dispose of at authorized municipal facilities.
Dealing with Heating Furnace Oil
Heating oil for your home’s furnace can also be a major issue for disposal, especially if you’re dealing with oil from leaks or a full furnace oil spill. Instead of trying to manage this issue yourself, it often makes sense to call in the professionals to clean up the oil and decontaminate the property. The process often looks like this:
- Initial Assessment: A response team will arrive and assess the situation, which may include other agencies. They’ll offer cleanup options, including heating and air quality protection barriers, so you can stay in your home during the project.
- Oil Cleanup: They’ll clean up the immediate spill, including sealing the area and using air-moving equipment to remove fumes and odors. This will include the removal and disposal of any damaged property.
- Home Remediation: Depending on the extent of the spill, additional remediation may be required, including contaminated soil removal. They will advise on a course of action to ensure the environment and your property value aren’t affected.

Oil Disposal for At-Home Businesses
While big businesses have to deal with waste oil as per state and federal rules on transportation and disposal, if you generate used motor oil or other petroleum products in your Massachusetts at-home small business, you may qualify for the Massachusetts Very Small Quantity Generators (VSQG) program. This program from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) allows businesses to dispose of small quantities of hazardous waste via qualifying residential disposal options, such as the NEDT Household Products Collection Centers.
At NEDT, we’re proud to offer multiple programs to help homes and home-based businesses manage household hazardous waste, including household oil disposal. We offer a pick-up service for all MA residents, home heating oil spill cleanup, and our Small Business Quick Serv Program, which allows you to drop off VSQG-compliant hazardous waste at any of our locations. We’re standing by to also help with these and many other types of household hazardous waste. See our locations, contact us online, or call us at 1-866-769-1621 to get started.
